Aerial Photography of Los Angeles

A little over a week ago, I was able to visit Los Angeles to get some headshot photography done for myself by Dylan Patrick. However, while I was there, I was also afforded the opportunity to try my hands at aerial photography in LA with my friend Mike Kelley.

I had never done aerial photography, but when Mike had mentioned that he knew a contact for a helicopter that we could go halvies on for an aerial tour of LA for a couple hours. I quickly agreed, and started doing some last minute prepping to make sure I could get at least a couple cool aerial photographs from the day.

I went into the trip without much knowledge on what I was doing. I had already bugged Mike about what settings and lenses to use for the trip, and got a basic understanding on how to capture some photos correctly. I was able to meet up with Mike at his place, and we drove to the private airport where we would be taking flight from.

The general experience of being in a helicopter to take aerial photography of LA was a bit of a surreal one. While I had never been in a helicopter before, I’m often travelling by flight all over the United States. Also, in my younger years, I had a moment where I skydived often, hanging out at a local dropzone in Michigan. While those years are behind me now, I certainly don’t have a fear of heights, and was excited for the opportunity.

As for the aerial photography, that was also incredibly exciting. So often am I working within the mediums of headshot photography or portrait photography in Albuquerque, that I rarely get to go out and try something new with it’s own set of unique challenges and techniques. Aerial photography was that for me.

Immediately posting the images up on social media, I was able to get a lot of attention from peers and friends. They all asked me if these would be available for prints, and I said yes, without much plan as to how I was going to get them up on an aerial photography store. Well, a week later, I have that figured out.

While giving aerial photography in LA a try, I completely fell in love with it. In the future, I’m hoping to be able to take more photos of the Los Angeles cityscape, as well as take photos of Chicago, San Francisco, Detroit, New York City, Albuquerque, Phoenix, Denver and more. While taking aerial photography of these cities will take an immense amount of time, I’m hoping to make it a side project of mine for the coming year.
