Followup to my Albuquerque Photography Workshops on Outdoor Lighting

A month or so ago, I taught Albuquerque Photography Workshops about outdoor lighting. The response from the Albuquerque photography workshop was stellar, and everyone agreed that they learned a ton from the day. Following that photography workshop, I got a few people who reached out to me, asking me to rehost the workshop again, as many who wanted to attend were unable to. I was happy to comply, which brought upon for the planning of Outdoor Lighting Workshop Round 2 on April 27th.

The general class worked much liked the last one. It starts with a classroom session for 3 hours at The Sandbox, where I teach the Inverse Square Law, and various lighting techniques on how to properly light a scene. I also explain my process of achieving beautiful depth of field while having full control of the lighting. This giant block of information is followed with a general Q&A where we’re able to talk about anything related to photography. Anything from lighting to proof galleries and contract writing was covered, and hopefully provided a lot of insight to those who were struggling with the different aspects of becoming a professional photographer.

We then break for lunch and meet back up at the Bosque for hands on training of the gear with a model to use as our subject. For this round, I chose Samantha Fowler, a local model here in Albuquerque. I have worked with her in the past, and if you’ve looked through my portfolio before, I’m sure you’ve seen that some of my favorite work to date is with her as my muse. While the day was windy, we were able to get some really fantastic images.

Students came from all over New Mexico, which was much of a surprise to me. Photographers 3 hours north in Taos, NM and photographers as far south as Las Cruces, NM made there way to Albuquerque to learn all the techniques to understand and manipulate off camera lighting outdoors. I’m completely humbled and excited to be part of such a positive project for photographers in New Mexico – with the goal to build a photography community, while improving all of our talents in photography.

Jennifer Garrett

A very special thanks to my friend and fellow photographer Jennifer Garrett. Jen got in touch with me and offered to help with some Behind the Scenes video work – which was something I desperately needed for marketing materials for future Albuquerque photography workshops and lectures. Aside from that, she was also there to help anyone who may be running into problems and provided to be an incredible assistant for the day. By having her there, I was able to coach everyone as they needed, and she was able to help when I was busy with others. I truly cannot thank her enough for the hard work she put into the day.

Lens Rentals

Following the last workshop, I was put in touch with LensRentals, where they offered to supply me with any gear I may need for the workshop. In the past, I offer up my camera gear to those who might be interested in using it. While this is a great opportunity to try new gear for the students, it’s limited to strictly Canon gear. With LensRentals help, I was able to provide students with Nikon glass, as well as some equipment to help with video and audio for the filming taking place during the class. Thank you LensRentals for being so helpful and making the day go so smoothly.

The Sandbox

The Sandbox is a coworking collaborative space that is somewhat new here in Albuquerque. I got in touch with them in the past, and they have offered to provide the classroom for my Albuquerque photography workshops. Not only is the space great, but they’re working hard to build the arts community in Albuquerque – a project I have passion for as well. Special thanks to Aryon Hopkins and Ben Daly for being so helpful and providing a comfortable place for me to teach key points to photography.

Samantha Fowler

As stated above, Samantha Fowler is a local model here in town and was everyone’s muse for the day. Not only did provide for a beautiful subject for everyone to practice on, but her positive attitude and patience made the day go by so well. And she did this all in windy conditions while being a couple months pregnant with her first child.

Kata Baron

If you’ve read my blog or Facebook posts in the past, you’ve probably heard her name before. Kata Baron is the makeup artist I use in town for all my photoshoots, and is the surefire way to make everyone look great on and off camera. Thanks again Kata, for working with my crazy time constraints and ambitious projects.

My Students

Last but not least, a very special thanks to my students from the day and from the previous one. Not only were they so helpful with each other, but their positive attitude and eagerness to learn made the entire day go great. I’m overjoyed that they were able to take so much information from the busy day, and get some cool new photos for their portfolios as well.

Reviews[separator]

Much like last time, and the recent updated to my website, I want to provide some transparency, and offer up reviews of the workshop from my students. I simply asked them to provide me with feedback, and did not encourage them to write positively or negatively about me.

Very hands on, patient, loved being able to test out different equipment and learn from one of the best! Would highly recommend it to anyone interested in lighting. I usually don’t photograph in that style and prefer natural lighting but now I’m completely in love! 🙂

I am so glad I took Zach’s lighting workshop! I have always been a natural light photographer and didn’t really see the use for artificial lighting outdoors but OMG was I wrong! Learning how to properly use light and light modifiers coupled with natural light was a total game changer for me! Thanks Zach!

Zach’s Outdoor Lighting Workshop is a serious game changer, the content and experience of the workshop is amazing and the hands on experience you gain from the work shop is amazing. Zach is so willing to help in anyway that he can and had equipment readily available for the entire class to experiment with! I loved the workshop and feel that my lighting knowledge is mounds and leaps better than when I initially walked into the class :-). If you’re considering taking in course from Zach, I highly recommend it!!!

I wasn’t able to make the first Outdoor Lighting Workshop and I was broken hearted, but I was I was ecstatic when I found out Zach was having another workshop in Albuquerque! I had zero knowledge of artificial lighting beforehand and I knew that if I wanted to take a step further into the photography business, I needed to learn from the best! Zach’s teaching style is awesome. He is so helpful and patient. The in-class workshop and being on location were both incredibly insightful. Taking this workshop opened my eyes to the amazing possibilities to capture the perfect photo using outdoor lighting. I can’t wait to use the information I gained from this workshop in my future work. Thank you so much, Zach!

If you’d like to see some of the photos taken by others from the workshop, you’re able to do so by visiting the Facebook Event page I had with the workshop. Again, thank you to all those who attended and helped with making this workshop a success. I look forward to providing more photography workshops to Albuquerque, as well as all over the United States.
